Workshop, lezing en panels op Erasmuscon
Elk jaar wordt de Europese conventie voor sciencefiction en fantasy georganiseerd. Het is een meerdaagse bijeenkomst voor liefhebbers van sciencefiction, fantasy, horror en aanverwante genres, vol van panels, lezingen, workshops en speciale activiteiten.
Dit keer is de Eurocon in Rotterdam en het heeft de titel Erasmuscon meegekregen (16 t/m 19 augustus). Het is een week na de Worldcon in Glasgow (8 t/m 12 augustus), dus er wordt op een breed, internationaal publiek gerekend.
Tijdens Erasmuscon treed ik vier keer op. Het gehele programma (blokkenschema) en de precieze invulling kun je bekijken op de website van de Eurocon.
Op vrijdag 16 augustus geef ik een lezing getiteld "Digesting Climate Change" (10.30 tot 11.15 uur) en modereer ik een panel "Appropriation or Appreciation: the tension between author freedom and cultural sensitivities"(16.00 tot 16.45 uur). Beide in de Penn zaal.
Zaterdag heb ik geen optredens. Dan is wel een workshop middeleeuws zwaardvechten, dus ik denk dat ik daar ga kijken (en/of meedoen).
Op zondag 18 augustus ben ik weer aan de beurt, eerst met een panel "Expanding Horizons – (y)our favorite non-Western fiction" (11.30 tot 12.15 uur, Penn), waar we niet-Westerse speculatieve fictie gaan bespreken. Ik heb al boeken uit Sri Lanka, Singapore en Nigeria klaarliggen. En aan het eind van de middag geef ik een korte workshop Worldbuilding.

Ik ben een groot liefhebber van klimaatfictie (CliFi, KliFi) in allerlei vormen en maten. Meerdere van mijn eigen verhalen vallen ook in dat genre, of hebben klimaatverandering als ingrediënt of achtergrond. Onder andere de door mij samengestelde bundels Grontopia en Verteerbaar gaan daarover: respectievelijk over klimaatadaptatie en de eiwittransitie, maar ook in het verhaal Het land van de vrijheid (te lezen op deze site) heeft klimaatverandering(sontkenning) als decor. Daarom ben ik gevraagd een lezing te geven over dit onderwerp: Digesting Climate Change."Climate Change looks to be here to stay. We hear the warnings and know what we have to do to reduce our CO2 emissions, but what if human nature takes over and we are left with no other options than to harness climate change?
Martij
n Lindeboom likes to work together with scientists and researchers when he writes his stories. That has resulted in a number of books about archaeological finds, where he wrote fictional histories to go with the scientific articles. More recently he has combined scientific research in climate change and the protein transition with science fiction stories in two anthologies, titled Grontopia and Verteerbaar (Digestible).
During his lecture Martijn will talk about dealing with climate change by looking at current science, while also offering insights from science fiction works like The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson, Hummingbird/Salamander and Borne by Jeff VanderMeer, the MaddAddam-trilogy by Margaret Atwood and classics like The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler and The Sheep Look Up by John Brunner. Come and get practical tips to use in your advantage, like making cheese from CO2 and oxygen, so our farm animals can retire. Here you get offered new perspectives through stories, to digest Climate Change in our future."
Appropriation or Appreciation
Een van de meest ingewikkelde en gevoelige onderwerpen - ook in de speculatieve fictie - is het fenomeen cultuurroof en wit privilege. Veel mensen zijn zich niet bewust van wat dat inhoudt en hoe dat doorwerkt in het schrijven van verhalen en de mogelijkheid om gepubliceerd te worden. Wanneer gaat interesse in en waardering voor een andere cultuur over in toe-eigening? Ik verwacht een spannend gesprek.
"In recent years, the science fiction and fantasy markets have become vastly more inclusive to non-Western viewpoints and writing. With it has come a re-evaluation of privilege and the way authors can or can’t take inspiration from other (marginalized) cultures when they themselves are not part of it.
